Romans Cross-Country Running Team Completes a Great Season at the City Finals

The Running Romans finished their season this year with a milestone - participation in the City Finals. This year the Varsity Girls Team qualified for the City Finals, held on November 20. The City Finals is limited to the top ten school in the city. This is the first time the girls team qualified to participate in the City Finals in at least the last twenty years.

In the City Finals, the girls team did great. The top five girls all ran their fastest time of the year. The most outstanding performance was turned in by Olga Ivaniv, who finished 23rd in the entire city, running the difficult, hilly, three-mile course in 20:43. The other four scoring varsity athletes were Xenia Valdivieso (49th), Maria Baez (52nd), Karla Rugamas (53rd), and Monifa Palmer (60th). Shanna Swasey and Ingrid Hernandez also participated, and both run strong races.

The Boys Varsity Team, unfortunately, did not qualify for the City Finals race, but they did finish 2nd overall in the Western League. The Boys Team was beat only by Palisades. Other schools, such as Venice, Hamilton, University, Westchester, and Fairfax could not match the speed and talent of our Romans. Outstanding performances in the league championships were produced by Wilberth Diaz and Benito Patino. Other top varsity finishers were Juan Garcia and Angel Rodriguez, both only 10th graders. The three other varsity runners were Miguel Amaya, Eze Obi, and Ariel Dela Cruz.

The Boys JV Team finished first in the Western League. The top performer was David Wilson, who finished second in the race. It was an impressive performance, especially considering that David is one of the top sprinters in the league, and does not consider himself a true distance runner.

The Running Team is now looking ahead to the Track and Field season, with the Cross-Country season complete.
