On Friday, May 14, our Roman Track Team had an outstanding performance at the League Track and Field Championships. The other schools involved in the competition were Venice, Fairfax, Westchester, Palisades, University, Hamilton, and Manual Arts. Los Angeles High had a number of excellent individual performances. At the varsity level, Marcus Gillison showed himself to be one of the most outstanding athletes in the league by winning the 400 meter run and the long jump. He also finished third in the 200 meter run and anchored the 1600 meter relay team to a third place finish. Jose Romero also had a great meet. He finished third in the 800 meter run and was also a member of the 1600 meter relay team. Ariel DelaCruz was the third Roman to medal in an individual event due to his fourth place finish in the triple jump. The two other members of the 1600 meter relay team were Wilberth Diaz and David Orellana.
In the Frosh/Soph level of competition, the Romans also had a number of success in both individual and team events. Impressively, both James Bradford and Davis Chong won four medals. Bradford medalled due to his second place finish in the 400 meter run, fourth place finish in the 200 meter run, and by merit of being the anchor on the Romans strong 400 and 1600 meter relay teams. Chong medalled in the 110 meter and 300 meter hurdles, the long jump, and the 400 meter relay. Chong was able to earn three second place finishes and one third place medal. Other medallists for the Romans Frosh/Soph team were Nicholaus Butler, Matthew Carroll, and Jose Guerrero. They were all key members of the relay teams which earned medals.
Unfortunately the Roman Girls Track Team was unable to win any medals this year, but Vanessa Colon and Olga Ivaniv made strong efforts in running the mile race, finishing with times of 6:31 and 5:53 respectively.
All the members of the Roman Track Team who earned a medal at the League Championships earned the right to advance to the City Championships, which will begin with preliminary competition on May 20 at Birmingham High School.
